  • Juneteenth is for everyone to celebrate, regardless of race.
  • The goal: We hope that they understand that Juneteenth is a part of American history that has shaped and developed this country. We hope that people walk away with a better sense of not only what Juneteenth is but how they can support Black-owned businesses and creatives in Charlotte. What do you hope people get out of the events?
  • Take note: Not just on Juneteenth, but year-round, Blumenthal continues to recognize and support creatives and organizations of color by extending our help when and where we can.
  • Why now: It’s our chance to participate in the celebration by offering space and resources to the generations of people who have celebrated and honored Juneteenth for years.
  • It’s also celebrating the myriad of creative, educational and artistic things that have echoed since the freedom of enslaved people. Why is Blumenthal hosting a Juneteenth celebration?Ĭelebrating Juneteenth is celebrating freedom and the history of those whose freedom was finally realized. We asked him a few questions about the weekend. The event is spearheaded by Emmy Award-winning poet and Blumenthal Director of Creative Engagement Boris “Bluz” Rogers.

    The deets: Juneteenth Jam is happening June 17 at Bechtler Museum and June 18 at Victoria Yards in Uptown. Emancipation was not actually realized until General Lee surrendered and federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865.
